    In the latest episode of our Voice AI Insights podcast series, we explored how Voice AI is reshaping one of the most sensitive and vital industries where trust, accuracy, and empathy are non-negotiable: healthcare. Host Chryssa Skodra was joined by two distinguished guests, Dr. Stephanos Pavlides, a biomedical scientist and entrepreneur in clinical diagnostics, and Professor Charis Savvides, a lawyer and university lecturer specializing in digital innovation law.

    Their discussion delved into the transformative role of AI in healthcare, focusing on voice agents and the regulatory frameworks that ensure safe and effective implementation. In this article, we gathered all the highlights of their discussion that revealed how artificial intelligence is revolutionizing patient care, communication, and trust.     Frictionless access to healthcare

     

    Dr. Stephanos Pavlides opened the discussion in the first segment by pinpointing one of healthcare’s most overlooked frustrations: communication delays. “The biggest frustration in healthcare nowadays is getting in touch with it just to make an appointment or get answers,” says Dr. Pavlides, who is also an entrepreneur specializing in clinical diagnostics and preventive medicine and serves as one of the Directors of Bioiatriki Group in Cyprus (Yiannoukas & Pavlides Medical Laboratories).

    D. Pavlides revealed that a typical clinic receives around 2,000 calls per day, and when hundreds go unanswered, the result is both financial loss and delayed care. “Eighty-five percent of people who hang up will never call back. That’s not just annoying, it delays care for people who really need it,” he adds.

    According to Dr. Pavlides, 24/7 AI Voice Agents are the future of healthcare accessibility, offering “frictionless access to healthcare” with instant responses, no waiting lines, and no missed calls.

    Looking ahead, Dr. Pavlides outlined how AI will become the backbone of predictive and personalized medicine. “Healthcare is becoming preventative, predictive, and personalized to catch problems early, before people get sick.     In the second segment, Professor Charis Savvides joined the conversation to unpack the legal and ethical frameworks surrounding AI in healthcare. Prof. Savvides is a practicing lawyer, member of the Cyprus Bar Association, and university lecturer at the University of Nicosia, he brings deep expertise in digital innovation law, GDPR, and financial regulation. In addition, he has served as an Expert Panel Member of the EU Blockchain Observatory & Forum, advising European policymakers on digital assets frameworks

    He explained that under EU regulations, healthcare-related AI systems are classified as high-risk, requiring lawful data collection, transparency, human oversight, and extra protection for health data. “The combination of AI and healthcare gives no room for mistakes,” Prof. Savvides asserts. “AI in healthcare must be transparent, traceable, and accountable before it ever reaches patients,” he adds.

    Navigating global legal frameworks

     

    Prof. Savvides compared international approaches, noting that the EU has the strictest and most comprehensive framework under GDPR and the upcoming AI Act, while the US system relies more on sector-specific regulation and ethical principles. “Elsewhere, rules appear lighter and more fragmented. The EU ensures that AI systems are safe, effective, and transparent across all sectors,” he says.

    He also highlighted cross-border data protection is of paramount importance.“When data moves across borders -especially outside the EU- it requires very detailed, secure legal frameworks. Kalimera.aiI invests heavily to stay compliant,” explains Prof. Savvides.
